Who are the E&O staff during the journey?

The following staff are available for passenger's assistance:

Cabin Steward: The cabin steward responsible for your carriage is available at all times and can be called by the bell in the passenger's compartment. He will take care of passports, change the compartment from day to night configuration, and serve breakfast and other refreshments in the passenger's compartment as required.

Maitre d'hotel: The Maitre d'hotel will go to the passenger's compartment to take lunch and dinner reservations. The Restaurant Cars have tables for parties of 2 or 4 persons. He may ask passengers to join others to complete a table during busy periods.

Train Manager / Chef du Train: The train manager will be on hand throughout the journey. He will assist with passenger queries.

When and where does the E&O operate?

The E&O runs year round and passes through Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand. Countries travelled through depend on the selected itinerary.

It is the passenger's responsibility to ensure they comply with all passport, visa, customs and other formalities and regulations including obtaining vaccination certificates where necessary.

What is the check-in procedure?

Passengers may check-in 60 minutes prior to the scheduled departure.

Are there any luggage restrictions?

Space is restricted to two suitcases and two smaller bags. Items required for overnight should be packed into a lighter suitcase, which will go in your cabin. Items not required until your destination should be packed separately and will be carried in the luggage car, which is not accessible until your final arrival station.

What happens with Customs and Immigration on the train?

Passports are held by the Cabin Steward. Passports and customs formalities take place at the Malaysian/Thailand border and upon boarding or disembarking in Singapore. You will not normally be disturbed during the journey. Passports will be returned to passengers immediately prior to disembarking. Please note that when entering Thailand by train you can only stay a maximum of 15 days.

What are the different types of accommodation available on board the train?

There are three categories of cabins available on board the train:

Pullman: with upper and lower berths

State & Presidential: both with two single beds.

All compartments are air conditioned and contain an ensuite with shower, washbasin and WC. During the day, beds/berths are converted into comfortable seating.

Are all meals included?

Yes. Table d'hotel meals are included in the fare. Continental breakfast and afternoon tea are served in the passengers compartment, while lunch and dinner can be enjoyed in the dining car.

An a la carte menu is available for lunch and dinner and there is 24-hour compartment service for light snacks and refreshments. These are at an additional cost and paid for at the time of ordering.

Are special meal requirements catered for?

Orient-Express will do their best to cater for special dietary requirements such as vegetarian etc., provided a detailed request has been made at the time of booking. If a special request has not been made, the chefs will endeavour to prepare a dish with the ingredients on board.

Orient-Express is unable to provide meals requiring strict religious observance in the preparation.

Are beverages included in the price?

Complimentary tea and coffee are available at all times. Wines and bar drinks are not included in the ticket price but may be purchased at an additional cost. Bar drinks may be purchased in the Observation Car, Bar Car and from your steward.

How do I handle any gratuities?

Gratuities are at the passenger's discretion.

Are there any dress codes on board the train?

Casual elegant attire is suggested for daytime wear and for lunch. Suggested dress for evening is jacket and tie for gentlemen and equivalent for ladies.

What security is provided on board the train?

There is a discreet security presence and it may be necessary for passengers to make themselves and their luggage available for inspection. Safes are provided in all compartments. Visitors are not permitted to board the train.

Is smoking permitted on board the train?

Smoking is not permitted in the Compartments, Restaurant Car, Saloon Car or Bar Car. Passengers may smoke on the open deck of the Observation Car.

Can I use my mobile phone on board the train?

For the comfort of fellow passengers, the use of mobile phones and pagers is restricted to the travellers' compartment. At all other times, passengers are asked to have mobile phones and pagers switched off.

What climate can I expect during the train journey?

Generally speaking, as South East Asia is tropical, it is warm and humid most of the year, with the most pleasant temperatures, lowest in humidity and least rainfall between November and March. However at other times when rainfall can be heavy, it is generally for shorter periods, which are followed by bright sunshine.

How do I pay for beverages and other on board services during the journey?

Passengers can choose to settle on-board charges at the time of service or by maintaining an account by signing for beverages and other items. Items are priced in US dollars, but most European currencies are accepted as well as Thai Baht, Malaysian Ringgit and Singapore Dollars. Major credit cards such as AMEX, Diners Club, Visa, Mastercard and JCB as well as travellers cheques are also accepted. Unfortunately personal cheques are not accepted.
