Is the Belmond Royal Scotsman still pulled by steam engine?

No. Steam engines are no longer used on any of Belmond Royal Scotsman's routes. The train is now too heavy to be pulled by steam engine.

When does the Belmond Royal Scotsman operate?

Belmond Royal Scotsman operates between May and October. Refer to schedule sheets for exact dates and departure times.

What is the check-in procedure?

Passengers will meet at the Balmoral Hotel at the east end of Princess Street. Guests must to arrive at the hotel, leave their bags with the concierge and head to the Galley where they will meet their On Board Host. Guests should arrive at least 90 minutes prior to departure time. Guests will make the short walk with hand luggage to Waverley station and bags will be transferred for them.

Are there any luggage restrictions?

Cabins on board The Royal Scotsman have limited space. We recommend that each guest travels with one suitcase and one carry-on bag. Twin State Cabins have luggage storage space under each bed which is 28" (71cm) wide x 9" (23cm) high. Single State Cabins have no luggage storage space underneath the bed. There is no room for additional stored luggage on-board.

What is the on-board accommodation?

The sleeping cars provide 14 twin, 2 double, and 4 single State Cabins, beautifully fitted out in rich parquetry. All cabins have lower beds, dressing table, full-length wardrobe, hairdryer, individually controlled heating, cooling ceiling fans, opening windows and cabin service call button. Each cabin has its own private bathroom with shower, wash-basin and toilet, constant hot water, high quality toiletries and fresh fluffy, white towels every day. The train is stabled at night in a quiet siding or station so guests are assured a good night's sleep.

Does the Royal Scotsman cater for disabled passengers?

Guests with restricted mobility, or those confined to a wheelchair are asked to contact us directly to discuss the suitability of a journey aboard The Royal Scotsman.

Are all meals included?

Yes. All meals, wines, all alcoholic and other beverages are included in the price.

Are special meal requirements catered for?

Our on-board chef will be happy to assist? Just advise us in advance. There is a fixed menu for each meal, but do request an alternative if the posted menu does not suit you. Please advise us at time of booking of any allergies which we need to be aware of.

Do I need to pay any gratuities aboard the Belmond The Royal Scotsman?

Gratuities are not included in the ticket price. Whilst they are entirely at the discretion of the guests, we would suggest between 3-5% of the ticket price per person. This is discretionary, and whilst very appreciated, and shared with all the crew, it is not expected.

What is the dress code aboard the Belmond Royal Scotsman?

We recommend casual, comfortable clothing during the day. In the evening smart attire is appropriate, with gentlemen in tuxedo or kilt when dinner is formal.

Is smoking allowed aboard the Belmond Royal Scotsman?

For the comfort and safety of all our guests please note smoking is not permitted on-board the train at any time.

Are children and pets allowed aboard the Belmond Royal Scotsman?

For safety reasons it is regretted that pets are not permitted on the train. Children under 12 years of age travel at the discretion of The Royal Scotsman.

What is Belmond Royal Scotsman motor coach?

The Belmond Royal Scotsman operates its own luxury motorcoach, liveried in the same colour as the train. The coach follows the train around the country so when the train pulls into a station, the coach is already waiting to transfer guests to the visits and sightseeing opportunities.
